about

Lucky Jones, the masked vocalist of the weirdo brigade that is Middle England, gets the better of himself on ‘Old Town Sound’. The verse, all grainy bedroom-punk guitar loops and wistful bars about the listlessness of city life, is a pretty apt representation of how he’s feeling these days.

However, as much as he wants to lay low, he can’t help himself on the chorus - that sing-a-long chant which rises up out of nowhere and grabs hold of ‘Old Town Sound’ is something even Lucky can’t deny.

lyrics

Wake up, building's burning, it'll crumble and incase me
Parents hate. Am I not a mirror of what they see
Seven years bad luck since I've been broken all my days seem
To fade, in many ways they're wasted, never made the A-Team
Pity the fool, but I'm also pretty petty
Always been a bitter buttercup, I'm parked up on the settee
Elusive, useless, move like the London Yeti
Abominable bombing foreign children on the tele
And I'm watching, can't stop, I'm huffing and puffing
I got my body and my mind filled with something
Mind's feeling something, heartbeat is pumping
Feels like I'm looking off the edge before jumping down
Can't feel my legs man I'm buzzing
These games help my braincells by numbing them
Lonely boy, going home now I'm cumming
To ideas of beauty, that come from someone
I don't know, I've never been where I don't go
I'm only Human so I fear what I don't know
Camera zoom in, it's clear that a stones throw from here
There are dear souls lost in that clear smoke
Lost in their mind smog, rack up a couple lines dog
Gotta set my clock a couple times if imma rise up
Otherwise, I'm gonna lie in, I know there's people dying
But harder than it looks, to convince yourself you're trying
To move forward, long verses make the listener bored
Long service, worship Christian lord
But Krishna called, got pissed and missed the chord
Then I ran around town looking for a little miss to kiss me

I went away I'm alone now
But I can't be afraid I got that Old Town Sound
Oh I passed my days in the Old Town
But I wouldn't last a day without my Old Town Sound
I needed to change up my own style
And now I'm getting down to the Old Town Sound
Oh I passed my days in the Old Town
But I wouldn't last a day without my Old Town Sound

Wake up, and I realise it's all just been a farce
Mask on, fuck it, mask off, show them all my scars
Down the King's Head, fast cars and half-jars
Ever since I was little, I wanted to sound like Nas does
Good God kid, look what you gone and started
Getting looks from girls, stoosh face as if I farted
I'm a good place, go on put on your good face
We in this race, and when we win, we die and then get martyred
I made a couple bucks, gave more than a couple fucks
Misbehaviour taught me take it on the chin like buttercups
Waiting tables taught fake that bitter grin for better tips
Top up all these pessimists, I'm twisted, hope you got that gist down

You're cooler than cool
More Human than Human but you man are cruel
You're cooler than cool
More Human than Human but you man are cruel
You're cooler than cool
More Human than Human but you man are cruel
You're cooler than cool
More Human than Human but you man are cruel

I went away I'm alone now
But I can't be afraid I got that Old Town Sound
Oh I passed my days in the Old Town
But I wouldn't last a day without my Old Town Sound
I needed to change up my own style
And now I'm getting down to the Old Town Sound
Oh I passed my days in the Old Town
But I wouldn't last a day without my Old Town Sound

You're cooler than cool
More Human than Human but you man are cruel
You're cooler than cool
More Human than Human but you man are cruel
You're cooler than cool,
More Human than Human but you man are cruel

about

Middle England London, UK

Middle England is what you get when a group of misfits are thrown together on a small island that can’t stand itself. Moody, angry, caught between the desire to live life to the fullest and the sense of being beaten down by a world which regards you with suspicion and hatred - this is troubled music for troubled times, made by a bunch of people with little to lose and less left to live for. ... more
